Great Teacher Onizuka, also known as GTO, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tooru Fujisawa. The story follows Eikichi Onizuka, a 22-year-old ex-gang member who becomes a teacher at a private middle school in Tokyo. Onizuka aims to be the greatest teacher ever and uses unorthodox methods to connect with his students and help them overcome their problems. The manga series was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1997 to 2002 and has sold over 50 million copies. It has also been adapted into a television drama, a live-action film, and an anime series. GTO has received critical acclaim for its social satire and humorous approach.
