Black Torch is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tsuyoshi Takaki. The story follows Jiro Azuma, a teenage punk with the ability to talk to animals. He encounters a gravely injured cat named Rago, who is an immortal mononoke. Rago fuses with Jiro to give him a second chance at life, and together they join the Bureau of Espionage to stop other mononoke. The manga was serialized in Shueisha's Jump Square magazine from December 2016 to March 2018, and later on Shōnen Jump+ from April to July 2018. It was compiled into five tankōbon volumes. In North America, the manga was licensed by Viz Media. Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network praised the dynamic characters and story devices, but noted the lack of character development. Overall, Black Torch is a promising shounen action series worth checking out.
