Bamboo Blade is a Japanese manga series written by Masahiro Totsuka and illustrated by Aguri Igarashi. It tells the story of Toraji Ishida, a high school kendo instructor, who is challenged by his former upperclassman to a competition between their female students. Inspired by the challenge, Toraji gathers and trains a team of five girls, including the talented kendo practitioner Tamaki Kawazoe. The series was serialized in Square Enix's Young Gangan magazine from December 2004 to September 2010. An anime adaptation was broadcast in Japan from October 2007 to April 2008. The Bamboo Blade manga has been licensed for distribution in North America by Yen Press, and the anime has been licensed by Funimation. The series also inspired a video game titled Bamboo Blade: Sorekara no Chousen, released for the PSP in Japan in 2009.
